![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, Walker has one of his finest hand-to-hand combat moments, trying to convince us that he could take Ong Bak star Tony Jaa in a fight. What starts off as a rescue mission then expands to a second chase, with Dom pursuing Shaw with Ramsey in his front seat, barreling down a hillside while avoiding trees and eventually a cliff. Reborn as auto-savvy mercenaries, Dom and his family fall from the heavens and land gracefully on a windy mountain road, in pursuit of an armored bus with a kidnapped hacker Ramsey (Nathalie Emanuel) inside. The piece de resistance of Furious 7 comes at the beginning of the second act, after our heroes are recruited to work for the shadowy government head honcho Mr. They used to be street racers, then thieves, and then super agents - boom, now they’re terrorists. Filled with crunched cars and eye-popping stunt coordination, the sequence is a blissfully lunkheaded way to usher in the Toretto group’s new identity. The steel boulder tears up Rome and soon catches fire, with our heroes struggling to stop such a persistent object before it does eventually hollow out part of the city. Like Michael Bay’s opener for his film 6 Underground, it’s a chaotic but articulate set piece that makes a stunt driver and pyrotechnician’s playpen out of Rome’s narrow streets and features some dazzling motorbiking by one of Michelle Rodriguez’s stunt doubles (who pulls off a back wheelie and front wheelie to leap over a cable, flaunted in the trailer!). Fast X director Louis Leterrier’s most impressive contribution so far is the Rome-set chase from the film’s first act, which has Momoa’s Danté tricking the Toretto family into chasing a rolling one-ton bomb on its way to blow up the Vatican. ![]()
